In November, two guys meet casually because one has a synth to sell. He's a trained musician with years of stage experience and a solid IT background as well. The buyer is a former DJ and clubowner who now runs a successful business in graphic and multimedia design.

They start to talk about their musical interests, which leads to several consecutive encounters. And the vibe is clearly there: the common vision of making dance music that blends the eclectic mix of their influences, ranging from jazz and Latin to P-funk, dub, house and contemporary urban grooves.

After about four years of experimenting in their Antwerp-based sonic laboratory, the Campogrande sound is born together with about twenty songs. Four of them end up on a first 12" release, followed by a second release featuring the track Samba Sambei.

SAMBA SAMBEI

The track starts its existence as a Bossa-inspired lounge groove with a funky, happy-sounding set of chord changes. But the hook is clearly missing.

Campogrande then meets Senegalese singer "Bashir xx" and together they work out the "Samba Sambei" vocal hook. It is double-tracked with nice vocal harmonies and processed a little to give it its distinctive sound. At that point, the lazy lounge groove is slowly evolving into a rhythmically complex Latin house track. Synth arpeggio's and funky trumpet licks are then added to enhance the Latin and "summer happiness" feel, and a second male spoken vocal hook re-launches the track after the first break. During the mix, delay and filtering effects are used extensively as another compositional tool to make the track move continuosly.

'Samba Sambei' also features on these compilations...

Jay C, In Bed With Space
I'm lovin' this Warren Clarke mix of Samba its wicked. I don't usually like samba stuff, it's all the same but this is quality. It'll be in my top 10 somewhere, maybe even top5.
Cheers.

Richie Hartness, Untitled Music
Samba Sambei' gets off to a flyer with the Bossa Nova inspired lounge groove, the 'Warren Clarke Club Mix'. A funky rhythm, a cheerful chord change and an inspired hook. A track destined for greatness, this one launches into the groove, making you want to put down your San Miguel and dance till dusk. The 'Dub Mix' toughens up the beats, but uses much of the previous track, so is another fine mix, but a little less energetic. The 'Campogrande Radio' mix, is a cheesy version, with keyboards featuring as the lead and the formula that worked so well being rearranged to a simpler, less impactful track. Finally the 'Campogrande Club' mix, returns to the good stuff, allowing the beats to lead once again, this time with some fine electro keys to lift the vocal into the heavens, the crash the whole lot down onto the dance floor, for a release of pure samba energy.
