Jonathan Ulysses - Interview !

Apparently there is a recession at the moment, but by no means is that stopping Born To Dance’s continued 2009 drive! With industry legends Reza & Jonathan Ulysses joining forces with the label, we proudly present you with the stunning “We Shall Prevail”.

If you’re looking for that terrace anthem or want to wreak havoc on the dancefloor, then look no further, it’s here! “We Shall Prevail’s” effortless groove will hook you & then lock you in. Uplifting synths, infectious loops & a piercing vocal pulsate doing the rest of the work making this an essential summer floor filler. Kid Massive and Carl Hanaghan& Jamie Wamiedo the business on remix duties, and they do the package great justice.

With the Ibiza season kicking off & Space legend Jonathan Ulysses taking the infamous terrace, we caught up with the main man to get his take on DJing, production & all things music.

1.You guys have been around for a few years (in the nicest possible way) but when did you decide to collaborate in the studio & how do you guys work together?

I have known Reza for many years and always admired him as a producer. I also like his sound and his creativity when producing some of his past masters. On meeting on numerous occassions, we had always discussed making a track over the past 5 or 6 years but due to my heavy work schedule throughout the summer in Space and winter touring, it never seemed to happen and I was also working with other producers and the occasion never seemed to arise. However, on my return from tour in January, I gave Reza a call and insisted this has got to be our year and he agreed. We discussed the focus, direction and the kind of music we enjoyed to play and produce and in turn eventually we prevailed! I found that we work together very well, we are both positive and knew exactly what direction we wanted to take the track and pretty much nailed it with one great studio session and a fantastic track.

2.If you could work with anyone right now in the world, who would it be & why?

If I could work with anyone in the world for me it would be Stevie Wonder, because for me Stevie is the complete musician. His music goes that bit further and touches your heart & soul and his music will live on forever.

3.What’s your favorite studio tool?

My favourite studio tool is an O2R Yamaha Mixing Desk – why? Because the sounds that you can bring out of the desk are truly amazing, it’s very versatile which is great for vocals, effects and all round great music mixing.

4.Any plans for another collaboration between you both?

For my part, most definitely yes. I found Reza to be a real cool laid back guy with a real positive outlook towards house music.

5.Jonathan, you’ve been resident at Space Ibiza, one of the world’s most famous & respected clubs for over 10 years, how’s it looking this year & what have been your most memorable highlights?

This year is looking great at Space. I’m again back as resident for the 11thyear, I’m doing regular nights on Sundays for We Love and Monday’s for Monday’s Calling. As the season has just begun for me, the most memorable highlight at the moment is the Space Opening Party. I played one of the main set times on the outside terrace and got to play We Shall Prevail to an ecstatic and very appreciative crowd. For me, it was a major highlight to see 2,500 people going crazy to a track that we produced only a few months previous.

6.You guys have been playing all over the world for a few years now, but where in the world holds something special for you? Where do you most look forward to going to?

For me, the first place will always be Ibiza. I own a property there and have been working on the island around 14 years. Although, recently I have been doing a lot of tours in Brazil and traveling across the country to Florinianopolis to Rio to Janerio, from Sao Paolo to Bela Horizonte and found it to be a fantastic, beautiful, spirtual and energetic country with stunning countryside, sexy girls and a great human attitude.

7.JU, 2008 saw the launch of your‘Ulybug’ brand which you’ve also been touring. Tell us more & where did you get the idea from?

The Ulybug idea comes from a nickname that I used to be called in my youth. The nickname was lost throughout my later youth but I always wanted to do my own parties and have a brand that represented me. So, when I decided to start the company I felt the only name that could truly represent me was the Ulybug. I got Jeff Cummins (who had previously designed albums for The Beatles, Rolling Stones and many prominent bands of the 1960/70’s) to design a logo that represented myself. From there, I decided to set up a clothing company and my own parties. We are now on our 5th party. We have held them in clubs including Herbal in London, La Roca in Brussels and Mynt in Belfast and intend to continue raising the profile of the Ulybug parties through 2009/10.

8.The “recession” has been hitting clubland pretty hard in recent months. What have you guys been noticing & what are you finding the best cure to be?

Yes I too have noticed the effects of recession, people aren’t coming out on Friday nights as much as they did before and restricting themselves to maybe one club night per weekend instead of 3. I think the smoking ban in the UK has also contributed towards emptier dancefloors, but I feel the remedy is to let the music do the talking.

9.What’s the best piece of advice you can offer to any aspiring DJs or producers?

The advice I would give to aspiring DJ’s and producers would be to get involved in everything, production, your own night, having an affiliation with a major club or promoter, keep putting your music out there, even when you are a named DJ, I still give out at least 1,000 free CD’s a year in person or via my website and I will be releasing 5 or 6 tracks this year this summer alone and will continue to do compilations. Be nice to people because you never know when you may need that person to be nice to you and do whatever you have to to keep your name out there.

10.Finally, you’re stuck on a desert island with 3 items, what 3 items are they?

If I was stuck on a desert island with 3 items, it would be my girl, my satellite TV and my music.
